Environmentally friendly adhesive raw materials for a long shoe life
Bayer Material Science offers a large portfolio of polyurethane and polychloroprene raw materials for adhesives, that offer excellent solutions for high quality athletic and street shoes. Polyurethane- and polychloroprene based adhesives show good adhesion on a multitude of substrates and satisfy the most demanding quality requirements. They can be formulated as one- or two-component systems and these raw materials are available for use in solvent- or waterbased adhesives.
Waterborne adhesive raw materials: polyurethane dispersions, polychloroprene dispersions
A growing sensibility towards the environment and more stringent regulations in many countries have resulted in a strongly growing demand for environmentally friendly adhesive systems. Bayer MaterialScience provides a multitude of raw materials to satisfy this demand. There are waterbased polyurethane dispersions (Dispercoll® U -range) as well as polychloroprene dispersions (Dispercoll® C-range), that are offering a property profile that matches the ones of traditional, solvent-based systems. In some properties they even offer significant advantages.
Dispercoll® U - Polyurethane dispersions for thermo-activatable shoe adhesives
Polyurethane dispersions of the Dispercoll® U-range contain a high-molecular weight polyurethane dispersed in water. It de-crystallizes at temperatures of more than 50°C and becomes tacky. These dispersions can be formulated as one- or two-component systems. A two-component system formulated by adding a polyisocyanate like one of the Desmodur® D-range results in a crosslinking and ultimately offers an increased durability, so adhesives last longer and offer a better mechanical resistance. This makes them particularly suitable for shoe sole applications.
The major properties and advantages of Dispercoll® U are:
Excellent initial strength even if applied wet in wet
Fast increase of strength
Highly fillable
Can be formulated to high softening points without use of Isocyanates
Very good resistance against humidity, oil and chemicals
The properties of the final adhesive can be further enhanced by the addition of polyisocyanates like the ones of the Desmodur® D-range in a two-component system.

Dispercoll® C - Polychloroprene dispersions for contact adhesives in shoe applications
Polychloroprene dispersions of the Dispercoll® C-range are used as contact adhesives and can be formulated as one- or two-component systems. They can be formulated as contact adhesives which are particularly suitable for the bonding of the upper shoe and the inner sole. Dispercoll® C has a low monomer content and provides the following properties to the shoe adhesive system:
Long open times
Immediate good adhesion
Rapid build-up of bond strength
Solvent-free
Very good resistance against humidity, oils and chemicals

Dispercoll® C
Solvent-based adhesive grades: Baypren®, Desmocoll®, Desmodur® R
Solvent-based polyurethane adhesive raw materials of the Desmocoll® -range are used to formulate thermo-activatable adhesives that can be applied as a one- or two component system. Another group of raw materials in this category are the polychloroprene adhesive grades of the Baypren®-range which can be formulated into contact adhesives. As with the above described raw materials, these grades can be modified as well to obtain specific properties like a higher durability or an enhanced resistance by a post-reaction with Desmodur® R-grades.
