Waterborne coatings: Environmentally friendly and high quality


Bayer MaterialScience has a wide range of water-based dispersions, especially polyurethane dispersions, for the creation of environmentally friendly waterborne coatings. These can replace solventborne systems to at least an equivalent standard.

Greater use of waterborne coatings and adhesives
Growing concerns about the environment and the VOC legislation in many countries have resulted in the replacement of many solventborne systems with waterborne systems. Bayer MaterialScience offers a large range of environmentally friendly water-based dispersions, such as e.g. polyurethane dispersions, for almost all applications in the coatings, adhesive and specialty markets:
    • Polyurethane dispersions (PUD)
    • Polyacrylate dispersions (PAC)
    • Polyester dispersions (PES)
    • Polyester-acrylate dispersionen (PES-PAC)
    • PUD/PAC hybrids
    • Polychloroprene dispersions
    • Hydrophilic polyisocyanates for two-component applications (Bayhydur®)
    • Hydrophobic, low-viscosity polyisocyanates for two-component applications (Desmodur®)
    • Hydrophilic blocked polyisocyanates for stoving systems (Bayhydur® BL)
Waterborne coatings offer the highest quality
The quality and robustness of waterborne coatings is increasing steadily due to innovative raw materials. The properties of waterborne coatings are now comparable with or even better than their solventborne counterparts in terms of chemical, mechanical and optical stability. With our toolbox of numerous poly-isocyanates and polyols we have the best possible prerequisites to develop tailor-made waterborne system solutions for our customers.

Our waterborne dispersions: a range of uses
Our product line of Bayhydrol®-based polyurethane, polyacrylate or polyester dispersions are today used in waterborne coatings for almost all industrial and consumer goods. The Bayhydrol® range can be divided into the following product lines:


Bayhydrol® Ufor hydroxy functional polyurethane dispersions (PUD)
Bayhydrol® UH for high molecular polyurethane dispersions (PUD)
Bayhydrol® UVfor radiation curing / UV-curing polyurethane dispersions (PUD)
Bayhydrol® A for hydroxy functional polyacrylate dispersions (PAC dispersions)
Bayhydrol® AH for high molecular polyacrylate dispersions (PAC dispersions)
Bayhydrol® UAfor polyurethane / polyacrylate hybrid dispersions (PUR/PAC dispersions)
Bayhydrol® Efor polyester dispersions (PES)

Products in the Bayhydrol® range may be formulated as one- or two-component systems in combination with poly-isocyanates in the Desmodur® or Bayhydur® range.
