NMP-free and co-solvent free polyurethane dispersions through the acetone process

A key benefit of Bayer MaterialScience's process capabilities is the ability to produce N-methylpyrrolidone (NMP) free, as well as completely co-solvent free polyurethane dispersions by the so-called "Acetone Process".

In contrast to the prepolymer mixing process, the acetone process is summarized by a complete buildup of the molecular weight of the polyurethane chains in an acetone solution. After the subsequent dispersion step, the acetone is distilled off. The result is a solvent free, high molecular weight aqueous polyurethane dispersion.

The elimination of NMP makes polyurethane dispersions a very interesting product line with respect to California Proposition 65 and European legislation, both of which require special labeling for products containing NMP.
